Services Offered
While specific detailed lists of services for Dr. Kanakry DVM's individual practice might not be publicly exhaustive, general veterinary practices led by experienced DVMs like Dr. Kanakry typically offer a comprehensive range of services essential for maintaining the health and well-being of companion animals. Based on typical offerings of established veterinary clinics in Maryland and the glowing testimonials, one can expect the following core services:
- Preventive and Wellness Care: This is fundamental to a pet's long and healthy life. It includes annual or semi-annual physical examinations, tailored vaccination protocols based on your pet's lifestyle and risk factors, parasite prevention (for fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites), and nutritional counseling to maintain an ideal weight and address specific dietary needs.
- Diagnostic Services: When pets are unwell, accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial. This typically involves a range of in-house and external laboratory services for blood tests (e.g., complete blood count, chemistry panels), urinalysis, fecal examinations for parasites, and cytology. Imaging services like digital radiography (X-rays) are also standard for diagnosing orthopedic issues, internal organ problems, and more.
- General Surgery: Common surgical procedures often performed include spaying and neutering, soft tissue surgeries (e.g., mass removals, foreign body extractions), and minor wound repairs. A focus on pre-surgical assessment, safe anesthesia, and effective pain management is paramount for patient comfort and recovery.
- Dental Care: Oral health is intrinsically linked to overall health. Services include professional dental cleanings under anesthesia, dental X-rays to assess beneath the gum line, and extractions of diseased or damaged teeth. Regular dental care helps prevent pain, infection, and systemic health issues.
- Emergency and Urgent Care: While not a 24/7 emergency hospital, DVM practices like Dr. Kanakry's typically provide care for urgent non-life-threatening conditions during business hours. They can offer initial stabilization for more critical emergencies and provide referrals to specialized emergency veterinary hospitals if necessary.
- Pain Management: Managing pain, whether acute (e.g., post-surgery, injury) or chronic (e.g., arthritis in senior pets), is a significant aspect of modern veterinary care. This can involve medications, and potentially discussions about adjunctive therapies.
- Microchipping: To enhance the chances of reuniting lost pets with their owners, microchip implantation and registration services are routinely offered.
- Geriatric and Senior Pet Care: As pets age, their needs change. Special attention is given to senior pets, focusing on early detection of age-related diseases, pain management for conditions like arthritis, and optimizing their quality of life.
- Euthanasia and End-of-Life Care: Providing compassionate guidance and support during the difficult decision-making process for end-of-life care, including humane euthanasia services, is a crucial aspect of veterinary practice.

Kanakry Anthony DVM Reviews
Dr. Kanakry is the best. He treated my dogs and cats. I had a rottie, Ceaser, that was diagnosed with bone cancer. Dr. Kanakry went above and beyond. Not only did he refer us to VOSM for surgery to remove the leg bone, but he also visited VOSM on his day off to check on Ceaser and the prognosis. Never once did I take any of 4 legged kids to him and feel that they weren't in the best hands. I appreciated his time during the visit, and the calls after to check on how my babies were feeling. I would be remiss if I didn't also mention Dr. Watts and Linda (tech). I moved an hour away and haven't found a better vet yet.
