My pup is 7 months old and I’ve been bringing him here since he came home to us at 10 weeks. Overall my experience has been fine but I brought him in today for a heat spot and overall check up after a bad boarding experience. I mentioned multiple times to both the vet and vet tech I saw today that he came home very matted but that I was still in the process of working through untangling his coat. I’d spent 4 hours yesterday after he came home, brought him to the vet at 8:30am this morning, and planned to spend the rest of the day today clearing the rest out. After they took him to the back to work on his heat spot, to my surprise the vet tech informed me they also shaved off a large mat on his hind leg. We discussed nothing about them brushing him or examining his mats in the back. They were only supposed to shave the area on his face where his heat spot was.I told her I wished they didn’t shave it off because - as I told her before - I knew they were there and was planning on getting it out. She just ignored my complaint and glossed over it and moved on.It still bothered me so I mentioned it to the front desk upon checkout, who called out the tech that shaved him. She at least was apologetic but I just don’t understand why they took it upon themselves to make grooming decisions that weren’t medically necessary and especially without my consent. She mentioned she shaved it because he winced at the area… well of course, because all she was doing was trying to forcefully brush them out. You cannot simply brush out mats like that, need to work to detangle and loosen with product and your fingers before brushing. I would not expect anyone else to do that tedious labor for my dog which is why I self groom at home and never once asked the vet office for help with the mats today and I purposefully stated multiple times I was in the process of detangling them. This breed is one where the owners take great pride in the coat. Every time I have brought him in the past they would have seen how well maintained his coat was and how invested I was in his behavioral training and coat maintenance.I’m still very annoyed because he already is shaved down way more than I’d like, due to my cutting away most of his very severe mats yesterday. And the little hair I could salvage they just shaved off - and very poorly at that - without asking me first. It’s especially upsetting because there’s nothing they can do to make up for it… it just adds much more time for his hair to grow back and even out. They may not think it’s a big deal which is why they so haphazardly shaved it but that was not their determination to make with someone else’s dog.The full body picture is of my dog from before his boarding experience in his normal coat. - Gina Zhang
