Red Lion Veterinary Hospital is a full-service general hospital that offers a wide array of veterinary services for dogs and cats, covering their health needs from puppyhood/kittenhood through their senior years. Their approach emphasizes preventative care as the most critical aspect of veterinary medicine. Their comprehensive services typically include:
Preventative Care: This is a cornerstone of their philosophy. Services include annual and semi-annual comprehensive physical exams (recommended twice annually for senior pets), tailored vaccination programs, nutrition counseling for all life stages, training guidance, and robust parasite protection plans (fleas, ticks, heartworm).
Diagnostic Imaging: Utilizing advanced digital radiography (X-rays) and ultrasound. These non-painful diagnostic tools allow veterinarians to get detailed internal views of bones and organs, aiding in the diagnosis of various conditions without the need for sedation in most cases.
Laboratory Services: Equipped with an in-house lab for quick analysis of urine and blood samples, including blood glucose, electrolytes, liver and kidney function, and red/white blood counts. They also perform rapid tests for Feline Leukemia, FIV, heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma with results in about 10 minutes. More advanced tests are sent to external laboratories.
Anesthesia and Surgery: Performing a variety of surgical procedures, including spays, neuters, and soft tissue surgeries, with careful attention to anesthesia safety protocols.
Dentistry: Comprehensive dental care services, which include cleanings and potentially extractions, crucial for maintaining overall pet health as dental disease can lead to other severe conditions.
Pain Management: Strategies for managing acute and chronic pain, ensuring the comfort and quality of life for pets with conditions like arthritis or post-surgical discomfort.
Microchipping: Offering microchip implantation for permanent identification, greatly increasing the chances of lost pets being reunited with their families.
Pharmacy Services: Maintaining a complete inventory of pharmaceuticals, vitamins, flea & heartworm preventatives, and specialty dietary food options for convenient access to prescribed treatments and wellness products.
Senior Pet Care: Dedicated attention to the unique needs of aging pets, including twice-annual health examinations to detect changes early, and advice on diet, supplements, and medications to help them maintain a longer, healthy life.
Emergency and Urgent Care: While primarily a general practice, they are equipped to handle many health issues and can provide initial assessment and stabilization for urgent cases during their operating hours.
Red Lion Veterinary Hospital distinguishes itself with several key features and highlights that resonate strongly with pet owners in Delaware:
Profound Care and Compassion: Despite one negative review, a significant highlight from long-term clients is the "care and compassion they treated our animals with." The understanding that "these fur babies are apart of our family" creates a deeply empathetic environment that sets them apart. This sentiment of being truly cared for is a powerful differentiator.
Cost-Saving and Trustworthy Second Opinions: A remarkable highlight is their ability to provide accurate second opinions that can save pet owners "thousands of dollars" and lead to a permanent switch in veterinary care. This demonstrates a commitment to ethical practice and effective diagnostics over unnecessary procedures, fostering immense trust.
Dedicated and Professional Staff: Clients consistently praise the "great staff" who are described as "amazing." This speaks to the professionalism, friendliness, and dedication of the entire team, from the doctors (including Dr. Jones and his children, Dr. Courtney Manetti and Dr. Luke Jones) to the vet techs and administrative personnel.
Clean and Odor-Free Environment: The facility is noted for being "very clean" and not having any "smell," which is a crucial indicator of good hygiene and a well-maintained environment, contributing to a pleasant experience for both pets and owners.
Emphasis on Preventative Care: Their strong belief in and active promotion of preventative care sets them apart. They strive to prevent disease through a well-rounded approach including vaccinations, nutrition, training, and parasite protection, aiming for long-term health rather than just reactive treatment.
Advanced In-House Diagnostics: The availability of digital radiography, ultrasound, and comprehensive in-house lab testing allows for quick and accurate diagnoses, often without the need for sedation, which is a significant benefit for anxious pets and concerned owners.
Family-Owned and Operated: The fact that Dr. Jones established the hospital in 1978 and has been joined by his children, Dr. Courtney Manetti and Dr. Luke Jones, creates a sense of continuity, family values, and a long-term commitment to the community.

Red Lion Veterinary Hospital Reviews
We first went to Red Lion Vet a few years ago for a second opinion on our husky’s leg injury. It ended up saving of thousands of dollars and we decided to switch to them permanently because of the care and compassion they treated our animals with. They understand that these fur babies are apart of our family. They have great staff and it’s very clean. It didn’t smell either. I cannot articulate how amazing our experiences have been here.
Sep 25, 2024 · VeronicaAbsolutely awful care and service all around. Every single time I've had to come there's a problem from ordering simple flea and tick treatment, doctors not being forthcoming with information, messing up vaccines, messages saying my dog is due for vaccines when they aren't and even after you complain they literally STILL can't get it together. Now I'll be switching vets because I simply do not have the time nor patience to explain to grown adults how to complete basic tasks. These complete idiots have cost me so much additional money, have made my dogs late for flea and tick treatment multiple times now and at no point has it been worth it to come here. Absolutely disgusted
Mar 31, 2025 · Gina RFirst new patient visit and didn't even do heart worm screening. Then had a sick pup a few weeks later and refused to see her and told us to go to Urgent Care. Then needed a prescription filled and wouldn't fill it without getting report from the urgent care vet that saw her. Very poor way to run a business. Now they have lost some business.
May 10, 2025 · Michael MooreDr. Luke and his team are nothing less than amazing. He has done our dog’s TPLO surgery and most recently the splenectomy of our elderly baby, giving her more time to spend with us. Without the surgery she would have had to been put down due to the size of the mass on the spleen. He took the time to give us a second opinion for that surgery and guided us through the unique concerns with a 14 yo dog. He assured us that he would take all the measures to limit the time under anesthesia and allowed for us to be there when she was first administered the sedatives so if she didn’t make it through surgery, we had our last moments with her, in our arms. These humans are very special to us and you and your fur babies will receive the very best care from them.
Apr 09, 2025 · Brittany GalosiThey always take great care of my kitties and our family’s four doggies. It’s so refreshing to have found a vet that truly cares (and doesn’t just recommend unnecessary services for money). Highly recommend!
