Small Animal Clinic in Ellsworth, ME, as a general veterinary practice, typically offers a range of services designed to address the common health needs of companion animals. While specific details may vary, a standard small animal clinic generally provides the following:
- Wellness Exams and Preventive Care: Routine physical examinations are crucial for monitoring overall health, detecting early signs of illness, and maintaining a pet's well-being. This includes comprehensive check-ups tailored to the pet's age and lifestyle.
- Vaccinations: Essential immunizations to protect pets from common infectious diseases, with vaccination schedules customized for individual animals.
- Parasite Control: Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for internal and external parasites, such as fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal worms, which are important for both pet and public health.
- Diagnostic Services: This often includes in-house laboratory testing (such as blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exams) and imaging services like digital X-rays to help diagnose various medical conditions.
- Dental Care: Services ranging from routine dental cleanings to addressing more complex oral health issues, including extractions, vital for preventing systemic health problems.

- Euthanasia Services: Providing compassionate end-of-life care and support for pets and their families during a difficult time.
- Referrals to Specialists: For cases requiring highly specialized expertise (e.g., complex orthopedic surgery, advanced internal medicine, or oncology), the clinic would typically provide referrals to veterinary specialists.
Small Animal Clinic in Ellsworth presents a mixed picture based on client feedback, highlighting varied experiences within the Maine community.
- Compassion During Difficult Times: One significant highlight is the compassion shown by Dr. Toothaker and his staff during challenging situations, such as end-of-life care for pets. This can make a difficult experience "easier to process" for grieving pet owners. This speaks to the empathetic support provided in moments of great need.
- Ability to Get Pets in Quickly: For urgent situations, the clinic has demonstrated an ability to accommodate pets quickly, which is crucial when an animal is experiencing "troubling issues." This responsiveness can be a critical factor for pet owners in distress.
- Friendly and Helpful Front Desk: Positive mentions include the helpfulness and support from the front desk staff, indicating a welcoming initial point of contact for clients.
- Mixed Experiences with Thoroughness and Professionalism: However, some clients have reported experiences where they felt concerns were dismissed, and examinations were not thorough. Issues raised include quick assessments, questioning the necessity of standard preventive care like yearly vaccines and nail trims, and perceived unprofessional behavior, such as blaming owners for a pet's pre-existing conditions. These varied experiences suggest that the level of detail and approach to client communication might not be consistent for all visitors.
- Concerns Regarding Advice and Cost: Some feedback indicates that advice given might deviate from commonly accepted veterinary practices (e.g., "didn't need yearly vaccines"), and that services rendered for the cost incurred were perceived as minimal.

Our dog experienced troubling issues. The staff was able to get us in quickly. Unfortunately, we had to end the dogs life due to cancer. Dr. Toothaker and all of his staff were extremely compassionate and accommodating. This made an uncomfortable, yet necessary, experience easier to process.
Mar 19, 2025 · Darrel HinermanI will not be taking my pets here again, and I can’t say I’d ever recommend it to anyone else. I’ve brought 2 rodents here in the past that were treated pretty poorly, but I assumed that it was a strange bias some people have towards rodents. I should have listened to my gut, but brought my newly adopted cat here anyway for a checkup. He was in the room less than 10 minutes, dismissed every concern I had. Told me my cat was 100% healthy. After less than 5 minutes with her I doubt anyone can safely assume any animal is 100% healthy. Told me she didn’t need yearly vaccines, didn’t need nail a nail trim unless she was elderly, even though they were causing her issues walking and she wouldn’t let me do it at home.Told me if I rub my cats gums and they are bloody then to come in… otherwise nothing was necessary. He also blamed me for my newly adopted pets obesity… which was caused by her previous owners, not me. Overall, in my opinion, very rude, unprofessional, and did not check her thoroughly at all. Did nothing but weigh her and payed almost $100 for that extremely short vet visit.
Jun 13, 2025 · JuliannaI just moved and my old vet had been my dog’s doctor since puppyhood. Looking for a new vet, I ran into some issues. The first place I tried…well, I reviewed them, but suffice to say it wasn’t good.I’m glad though. Because I wouldn’t have found this place. I have never had a doctor—of any type—spend this much time with me. And my dog seemed to trust him immediately. Even more than the old vet! And the clinic itself is bright, airy, and spacious.I really am so happy I found Small Animal Clinic.
Mar 08, 2025 · Kevin BorchersI would not recommend taking your pets here if you actually care about them. I took my male cat here a few months back to get him looked at and get him caught up on his shots. We waited in the waiting room longer than we were in the actual room. The vet hardly looked at him and told us he WAS FIXED. He is not since he just got our female cat pregnant. I shouldn’t have even bothered coming here, as I have already heard no so good things. It took me forever to get on the phone with someone and when I did they were not that friendly. Just be cautious and maybe look for 2nd opinions when caring for your pet.
Apr 17, 2025 · Hannah CollWonderful staff!! From the receptionist to the doctor, they were welcoming and so friendly!! We had a slight emergency with our husky while staying in Acadia on vacation. After calling 7 or 8 animal hospitals, Small Animal Clinic squeezed us in the following morning. Be advised…..all of the vets we called prior to them were not accepting new patients so they would not even see our dog. On top of that, they were very affordable!!
