South Valley Animal Clinic has several features that are often highlighted by its clients, reflecting both its strengths and areas for improvement. A significant highlight is the quality of the veterinary professionals themselves. Multiple reviews indicate that clients genuinely "like the vet we've worked with" and find the "people that work there are really nice and knowledgeable." Specifically, the veterinarians are praised for their decades of experience and their commitment to providing "affordable high quality care." The clinic aims to offer a calm, friendly, and inviting environment to help both pets and owners feel comfortable and relaxed during visits. The staff is noted for being "very nice and caring" during difficult times, such as when a pet needs to be euthanized.
However, it is crucial to address the recurring and significant concerns expressed in some reviews, primarily related to the clinic's administrative and communication practices. Multiple clients describe the office as "poorly run" and "disorganized," citing a series of errors that led to frustration and wasted time. These issues include:
- Communication Breakdowns: Clients report not receiving promised calls regarding lab results, uncommunicated changes in appointment status (e.g., being told an appointment wasn't scheduled when it was, or vice-versa), and a lack of clear instructions regarding necessary preparations for appointments (e.g., being told a consultation didn't require the cat, only to be informed it did upon arrival).
- Scheduling and Pickup Issues: Instances where clients were given specific pickup times for their pets, only to arrive and find "everyone is at lunch and no one can release my cat," leading to significant inconvenience and wasted time away from work.
- Pricing Discrepancies: Concerns have been raised about unexpected increases in costs, with one client reporting a quote discrepancy of over $70 for a single visit and a dental cleaning estimate almost doubling in a few years, leading to the perception that "the prices are just ridiculous now."
- Lack of Proactive Communication on Incidents: While not universally stated, a review indicated a significant adverse event (abscess after grooming) where the clinic allegedly "didn't even offer to tell me what happen or help me with the vet bills," leading to an emergency visit elsewhere.
These recurring issues with office management, communication, and pricing transparency, despite the perceived quality of the veterinary care itself, have led some long-standing customers to seek services elsewhere, highlighting a significant area for improvement.

It is important to note their operating hours, which are typically Monday through Thursday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The clinic is reportedly closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Given the feedback regarding communication, prospective clients are strongly encouraged to confirm hours, appointment details, and pricing directly with the clinic staff and to clearly articulate any expectations or specific needs during their calls.
In conclusion, for pet owners in Albuquerque and the wider New Mexico region, South Valley Animal Clinic presents itself as a local veterinary option with experienced and knowledgeable veterinarians who are genuinely caring. The clinic’s commitment to providing comprehensive services, from routine wellness to surgery and dental care, and their efforts to keep vaccinations affordable, are positive aspects for local families. The long-standing presence in the community also speaks to a foundational trust built over time. However, it is essential for prospective clients to be aware of the consistent feedback regarding significant challenges with office organization, communication, and pricing transparency. While the quality of direct veterinary care from the doctors themselves is often praised, the administrative and client service aspects have led to frustration for some. For New Mexicans considering South Valley Animal Clinic, weighing these factors and engaging in proactive, clear communication with the clinic staff regarding appointments, results, and costs will be crucial to ensuring a smooth and satisfactory experience for both you and your beloved pet in the heart of the South Valley.

South Valley Animal Clinic Reviews
I cannot express enough how poorly run this place is. I have been gracious and given so many chances through multiple mistakes on their end, but after today, I can't work with them any longer. My cat had been sick and I took her in for blood work and was told I'd have her results the next day which was a Thursday. They never called, so I called to follow up that Friday, and they are closed. I call again the next Monday to be told her results aren't in, actually I'm not sure, let me check and call you back. Never got a call back. I had a busy week, so didn't end up calling them again for a few days. They finally let me know she had diabetes, and I had an appointment on Monday that I didn't show up for. I let them know I never spoke to anyone or scheduled any appointment and in fact had called trying to get an answer and at no point did anyone tell me I had an appointment. So I schedule a diabetes appointment for the following Wednesday, and ask if I need to bring my cat, and they said no, its just a consultation. So I show up, and the vet says, "where is your cat?" She needed to be there so I could learn how to administer her insulin shots. So that was a few hours wasted and missing work. After a few weeks, I had a follow up with them today to take my cat in for another blood workup. They call to let me know she was ready and in that conversation I tell them I will be there at 12:30 to pick her up. I show up a few minutes before 12:30 and am told everyone is at lunch and no one can release my cat. I literally let them know the time I was going to be there and not once was I told that everyone would be gone. So they say, just come back in an hour and get her. I already left work to come and do this, I cannot leave work again for the same errand. I am beyond frustrated with almost every interaction I've had with their disorganized office staff. It is unfortunate because I do like the vet we've worked with. Today will be my last visit to this clinic, and this has been the same vet I went to even as a child with my family.
Jun 30, 2025 · Teresa MontoyaI've been coming to this veteran clinic for years and after today I unfortunately will not be returning. The prices have gone up so much. Specifically for dental cleanings. I did one a few years ago on my dog. That one came out to about 600 dollars for everything. I went for a consultation today for the same thing on another dog and it was going to be up to 1300! I can't see why it's gone up almost double in a few years. Also I had asked how much today's visit was going to be. Was quoted about 75 dollars and it came out to 144! Was not prepared for that and that's why I asked ahead of time. The people that work there are really nice and knowledgeable, but the prices are just ridiculous now. Unfortunately I will be going somewhere else from now on.
Apr 23, 2025 · Brandi MartinezI highly recommend that you do not take your animal to this clinic. They are not warm or compassionate at all.I went here with my partner because her dog gets care at this clinic. Unfortunately we had to put her dog down (18 year old pup). I can’t believe how they treated us. No one introduced themselves when they walked in to take the dog away to put in an IV catheter. They were unsuccessful with the catheter placement - an older dog doesn’t have great vasculature, totally understandable. We weren’t able to be at bedside when her dog was euthanized but no one ever told us when it was done. The front desk lady just came in and said “here’s your updated amount due.”We had to ask… ok so is she gone?Come on now. I’m an RN. Show some compassion. On top of this, when we picked up the remains - we noticed that there was another dogs paper work in there.I’m really hoping that this was our dog that we picked up.You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Jun 19, 2025 · Stephanie CarlquistI was recently a returning customer until today and that’s still deciding on to stay or find a different vet even if that means driving across town. I had an appointment set for my fur baby and even arrived 15 minutes earlier ( seeing if we are to be late it’s a cancellation or extra charge). I waited over 45 minutes to be seeing. I understand sometimes it takes a while not everything goes as planned. But we are talking 45 minutes. I had to call my mom to take my place and wait to be seen as I had to get back to work. After following up with my mom on how everything went she mention she got the worse customer service from the lady that attended her trying to ask basic questions about the dog and the lady seemed she did not want to help. She mentioned to my mom the office was backed up due to an incident that occurred which is very understandable but it’s at least a common courtesy to let people know the office is running super behind. We have to call and check in once we arrive in the parking lot at least let us know during that call “ we are currently behind your wait time will be longer than usual would you like to wait or at least reschedule” it’s called customer service and being courteous!!
Mar 26, 2025 · Brianna GarciaIf I could this place a negative one I would! DONT TAKE YOUR PET HERE! They scheduled me for vaccinations at 4 pm for my fur baby and they made me wait for an hour and 15 minutes to never take her in and I left at 5:15 because I had somewhere to be. They took in at least 10 other dogs before me and when I got there they never said they were running super behind. TERRIBLE SERVICE EVEN BEFORE THIS LAST APPOINTMENT!
