Coastal Virginia Veterinary Dermatology (CVVD) specializes exclusively in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the skin, ears, and related structures in pets. Their services are highly focused and designed to provide comprehensive solutions for dermatological issues. Based on common practices in veterinary dermatology and client reviews, their key services typically include:
Diagnosis and Management of Allergies: This is a primary focus, including environmental allergies (atopic dermatitis), food allergies, and flea allergy dermatitis. Services involve identifying allergens through various tests and developing long-term management plans, which may include immunotherapy (allergy shots), dietary changes, and medication.
Treatment of Chronic Ear Infections: Addressing recurrent and difficult-to-treat ear conditions, which are often a manifestation of underlying allergies or other dermatological issues. This may involve advanced diagnostics like video otoscopy to visualize the ear canal and eardrum, and specialized cleaning procedures.
Management of Skin Infections: Diagnosing and treating bacterial, fungal (like ringworm), and yeast infections of the skin. This includes identifying the specific pathogen and prescribing appropriate oral and topical medications.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Autoimmune Skin Diseases: Handling complex immune-mediated conditions where the body's immune system attacks its own skin cells, often requiring specialized diagnostics and immunosuppressive therapies.
Evaluation and Treatment of Hair Loss Disorders: Investigating causes of alopecia, which can range from hormonal imbalances to parasites or underlying systemic diseases, and implementing targeted treatments.
Diagnosis and Management of Parasitic Skin Diseases: Identifying and treating infestations by mites (like demodex or sarcoptes) and other external parasites that cause skin irritation and lesions.
Skin Biopsies and Cytology: Performing diagnostic procedures such as skin scrapings, skin cytology (microscopic examination of cells), and skin biopsies for definitive diagnosis of various dermatological conditions, including skin cancers and tumors.
Otic Surgery (Ear Canal Surgery): For severe or chronic ear conditions that do not respond to medical management, surgical intervention may be necessary, such as total ear canal ablation (TECA) for irreversible ear disease.
Client Education: Providing detailed explanations to pet owners about their pet's condition, treatment options, and long-term management strategies, empowering them to actively participate in their pet's care.
Coastal Virginia Veterinary Dermatology is highly regarded for several distinctive features and highlights that are consistently praised by its local clientele in Virginia Beach:

Her deep knowledge and specialization in veterinary dermatology are a significant highlight, providing a level of expert care that general veterinary practices might not offer for complex skin and ear conditions. They are noted for their patience and ability to make visits minimally stressful for both pets and their owners, even for "fear reactive" dogs like Randall.
Minimally Stressful Pet Experience: A standout feature is the clinic's ability to keep anxious or "fear reactive" pets calm during examinations and treatments. The review mentioning Randall's unprecedented calmness highlights a gentle and skilled approach to animal handling, creating a positive environment even for pets typically stressed by vet visits.
Effective Results: Clients report significant and positive outcomes, such as "Randall and I are truly grateful to have such a great practice so close to home" because they are "finally getting my pups allergies under control." The flawless ear canal surgery on a 14-year-old Shih Tzu with "no complications or extra costs" further demonstrates their surgical proficiency and integrity.
Clear Communication and Transparency: Dr. Robertson's willingness to be "upfront about the possible complications and extra costs" of complex procedures fosters trust and allows pet owners to make informed decisions without unexpected surprises.
Dedication to Pet Comfort: The focus on minimizing stress, even going as far as to soothe a usually "snappy" dog, shows a deep commitment to the pet's emotional well-being alongside their physical health.

Jun 27, 2025 · Heather DaviesCVVD is wonderful, and hands down the best vet dermatology office in Virginia Beach. The employees are extremely knowledgeable, and truly care about your pets needs. I have brought my dog Randall to numerous vets. He is fear reactive and typically gets snappy at the vet before they can even touch him! The first time I brought him to see Dr. Robertson, I was amazed at how calm my dog remained. I’ve never seen him behave so well at the vet. Dr Robertson and her tech, Michele, are consistently patient and make the experience minimally stressful for both pets and parents! Thanks to the team at CVVD, we are finally getting my pups allergies under control. Randall and I are truly grateful to have such a great practice so close to home.🐶 (photo below of how content he was after our last appt. with Dr. Robertson!)
Apr 02, 2025 · KARSON MCHENDRYThe doctors and staff here are genuinely kind, caring, and professional. I'm very thankful that we have their office in Virginia Beach. Becoming an established customer is very beneficial and your pet will receive the best care. My favorite thing is that they take swabs and look at samples on site. Often you know what is going on with your pet before you leave which makes it a lot easier to understand why your pet is being prescribed specific medications. It's not often a guessing game, it's a very educated decision by a doctor who cares about their patients and those who care for them. I recommend them to anyone with pets with any dermatological need, even down to an irritated ear.

I cannot thank her enough for the time she spent explaining and checking my fur baby out. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! What a great experience. The first thing I told my husband when I got home was "Wow! That was the best vet visit EVER!"
