Metairie Veterinary Ophthalmology Specialists, under the expert guidance of Dr. Meredith Mouney, a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, offers a comprehensive range of services dedicated exclusively to the health of your pet's eyes. Their specialized focus allows them to provide in-depth diagnostics and cutting-edge treatments that might not be available at a general veterinary practice. These services are crucial for addressing the intricate nature of ocular diseases in animals.
Comprehensive Ophthalmic Examinations: Thorough evaluations of the eye's structure and function, including tests like Schirmer tear tests (to measure tear production), tonometry (to measure intraocular pressure for glaucoma screening), and fluorescein staining (to detect corneal ulcers).
Diagnosis and Management of Corneal Diseases: Treatment for various corneal issues, including deep and infected ulcers, dermoids, endothelial degeneration, eosinophilic keratitis, and foreign bodies. As one satisfied client noted, Dr. Mouney successfully treated a severe ulcer for their Shih Tzu, Axel, when other methods hadn't worked, highlighting her expertise in managing complex cases.
Cataract Management and Surgery: Advanced diagnosis and surgical removal of cataracts, often including intraocular lens implantation to restore vision, aligning with current human ophthalmology standards. This is a critical service for pets experiencing vision loss due to cataracts.
Glaucoma Management: Diagnosis and ongoing treatment strategies for glaucoma, a painful condition that can lead to blindness if not properly managed. This can include medical therapies and surgical interventions like gonioimplantation and endoscopic laser cyclophotocoagulation.
Eyelid Surgeries (Blepharoplasties): Corrective procedures for conditions affecting the eyelids, such as entropion (inward rolling eyelid), ectropion (outward rolling eyelid), and cherry eye replacement (replacement of the prolapsed gland of the nictitating membrane).
Lens Luxation Management: Treatment for displaced lenses within the eye.
Ocular Ultrasound: High-resolution imaging to evaluate structures within the eye that may not be visible otherwise, aiding in the diagnosis of various conditions.
Electroretinogram (ERG): A diagnostic test to assess retinal function, crucial for diagnosing conditions like Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) or Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome (SARDS).
Management of Ocular Autoimmune Diseases: Specialized care for immune-mediated conditions affecting the eyes.
Ocular Tumor/Mass Removal: Surgical removal of growths on or around the eye.
Emergency Eye Care: Addressing acute and severe eye injuries or sudden onset vision issues, as highlighted by a review where a pet was seen quickly for an ulcer.
What truly sets Metairie Veterinary Ophthalmology Specialists apart are its distinctive features and highlights, which underscore its commitment to excellence in pet eye care.

Pet owners commend the compassionate approach taken with their animals, making what can be a stressful experience much more comfortable. Successful Outcomes for Complex Cases: The testimonials speak volumes about their ability to achieve positive results, even in challenging situations where other vets might have reached their limits. The case of Axel, the Shih Tzu with a persistent eye ulcer, demonstrates how Dr. Mouney's precise medication regimen led to rapid improvement, avoiding invasive surgery. This highlights their commitment to finding the right solution for each individual pet.
Collaborative Approach: While a specialist, Metairie Veterinary Ophthalmology Specialists often works in collaboration with your primary care veterinarian. This ensures seamless continuity of care and that all aspects of your pet's health are considered when treating an eye condition. They understand the importance of integrated care for the best possible outcome.
Commitment to Medication-Based Solutions When Possible: As evidenced by Axel's case, Dr. Mouney prioritizes healing with medication when appropriate, avoiding surgery unless it's the best course of action. This thoughtful approach can reduce stress and recovery time for pets and their owners.

May 28, 2025 · Richard Gitter MD, FACSMy Shih Tzu Axel had an eye injury ( ulcer) & he was seen & treated at my local vet for 4 weeks , than they referred me to see Dr. Mooney for further treatment as his eye seemed to not be getting better. I was very satisfied with my visit there. It has only been 3 days & his eye is looking better already. Will be there in 3 days for follow up check up on his eye. Dr. Mooney estimates it will take 3 weeks to clear up his eye with meds she prescribed. He is on 4 eye drops & 1 oral med . 3 of the eye drops have to be applied to his eye 6 times per day & the other drop twice a day, every 12 hours & oral med twice a day. I am happy as long as his eye can be healed with meds vs surgery. All the meds my local vet gave me for him was different except for one. Dr Mooney told me she needed to make sure that the right meds were given in order to heal his eye injury. I suggest if your furbaby gets an eye injury , see a specialist like Dr. Mooney by the second week if eye is not better ❣
Aug 22, 2023 · Sandra NaquinDr. Mouney is very knowledgeable, and her staff is exceptionally courteous and helpful. The office is clean, and provides an atmosphere that is pleasant for both the owners and pets.Unfortunately, these are the only positive things that I encountered in my visit. Mr. Mouney herself is far from courteous and is condescending in nature. It is wise that when you book an appointment with her office that you discuss specific pricing for her services, in addition the whole time while in the visit discuss with her what she is doing and how much it will cost, EVERYTIME SHE DOES SOMETHING. In my experience she did not discuss or even speak to me about my pet’s health, or what she was doing. She talks to her assistants the whole time, without even including you in your pet’s health; I kept asking questions in which were answered with condescending remarks. She will rack up your bill and will not disclose any pricing till after the services are rendered. I have never been to a vet, which does not discuss options with you before rendering services. For instance she placed a contact on my dog’s eye, that cost 85$, just for it to fall out 4 hours later. She did not disclose or even try to communicate with me the necessity or the option to add the contact. In addition, I never even got a call back when I had questions about my dogs health or even a follow up call after spending almost 500$ rather than the quoted 160$. While she is very knowledgeable in her field, it is clearly evident through her practice, her lack of communication skills, and the way she conducts her business that she is in it for the money rather than a passion or your pet’s health. I would not recommend her.
Feb 01, 2019 · Derek DMVOS for dogs: we have been very pleased with the care we are receiving for pre-op work to surgery. Staff is very friendly and they take the time to make sure you understand everything that pertains to your pets issue and go above expectations.
