VCA West Shore Animal Hospital Reviews
I’ve been taking my rescue here for a little over a year now. My dog needed to have dental extractions from being on the streets for so long . They kept me in the loop during the procedure to update me on what all was needed once they got him sedated and on the table. They also let me know about the monthly payment program they have since dental work can be pricey. Both veterinarians I have seen have been knowledgeable, explained everything throughly, and we’re loving towards my dog.
Feb 12, 2025 · R FI had an intuition that this place was just looking to up-charge from the time I made the phone call to set up our first appointment, and that was quickly and repeatedly confirmed during our interactions with them. I asked if they would be able to do a sanitary shave as well as shave a few minor areas of matted fur that had not been properly cared for or removed during our cats time at the Harrisburg Humane Society prior to us adopting her, and we were already being told how they would probably need to set up a procedure after the initial visit and she would need to be put under anesthesia to do any of the above. Kind of ridiculous assumption as this was just from a phone call alone without even seeing the cat first. For the appointment itself, both the vet tech and veterinarian appeared to give very minimal effort to do the exam, and exaggerated that the cat was being too difficult at every turn, which stopped them from taking her temp, clean both of her ears, or even listening to her chest with a stethoscope. This cat is generally a very calm cat, and has never bitten or clawed anyone, but the two of them struggled as if they have never handled an animal before. They were also told ahead of time that she’s been wheezing and we were worried about asthma, which we had recorded videos of just to show them exactly what is going on, which they didn’t even seem to care to see. After only a few minutes they told us that because they couldn’t do the very minimal requirements needed for a basic exam, she would need to be given Gabapentin as a sedative and brought back just so they could complete it. Then there was talks of a 3rd appointment where she would be under anesthesia because he wanted to order X-rays and and run tests because the vet kept making it sound as if it could be life or death for the cat if the cause isn’t identified quickly, and started mentioning all these severe illnesses it could be. This vet seemed overly scared and dramatic that he would be scratched or bit and told us that if this occurred, he couldn’t care for any the other animals being seen at the practice. There was no attempt to wrap the cat in a towel or use a muzzle (which would be excessive anyway), but after only maybe 15 seconds of holding her by the scruff of her neck, they gave up. The whole thing was just theatrics from start to finish because this was a “free appointment” given as part of the adoption process as Harrisburg Humane Society, and they needed to find a way to get their money out of us.Spoiler alert: we are not returning and just taking the cat to the family vet that we have taken all of our other pets to for 30+ years who isn’t scared of animals. It really seems like the vet we dealt with at VCA West Shore picked the wrong profession or went into the field for the wrong reasons, that being $$$.
Jun 12, 2025 · M. Joseph CroninMy dog pig was super nervous for her appointment, the team was supportive of her emotional needs from the front door. A nurse, I believe her name was mrs maggie, spent so much time with her to make her feel comfortable. Dr Richards was kind and made pig feel so at home for this visit. I highly recommend this clinic, it felt like a family and my dog will be coming back!
Jun 06, 2025 · Sarah LynchI won't be able to continue bringing our dog here. As mentioned in other reviews, which is very true, they focus heavily on upsells. The staff are friendly, and clearly enjoy working with animals and communicating with the owners. It felt very odd to basically be presented with a "care plan" with items that are justified by edge case medical problems and fears. It's fringing on predatory. The prices are outrageous, and paired with an overall creepy experience it's time for us to move on.
May 28, 2025 · JoeDr. Richards and the entire staff have been wonderful and truly care (not through just their words but also their actions). The information given is straightforward and they take the time to explain things if you have questions
