PetCure Oncology at Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center specializes in advanced radiation therapy for various types of pet cancers. Their services are designed to offer innovative and precise treatment options.
- Stereotactic Radiation (SRS/SRT): This is a cornerstone of their treatment offerings. SRS/SRT is an advanced form of radiation therapy that delivers highly focused, high doses of radiation directly to tumors with extreme precision, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. This allows for fewer treatment sessions (often 1-3 sessions compared to 15-20 with conventional radiation), less anesthesia, and potentially fewer side effects.
- Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT): Integral to SRS/SRT, IGRT uses imaging technology (like CT scans) before and during each treatment session to precisely locate the tumor, ensuring accurate radiation delivery and adapting to any changes in tumor size or position.
- Comprehensive Cancer Consultation: They provide in-depth consultations to discuss diagnosis, prognosis, and tailored treatment plans, offering pet owners a clear understanding of all available options for their pet's specific cancer.
- Collaboration with Primary Veterinarians: PetCure Oncology works collaboratively with a pet's referring veterinarian to ensure a seamless continuum of care, sharing information and coordinating treatment strategies.
- Patient Monitoring and Support: During radiation treatments, pets are closely monitored by experienced veterinary technicians and doctors. They prioritize patient comfort and provide supportive care throughout the treatment process.
- Treatment of Various Cancer Types: They treat a wide range of cancers in dogs and cats, including but not limited to:
- Head and Neck Tumors (e.g., oral melanomas, squamous cell carcinomas, nasal tumors)
- Brain Tumors (e.g., meningiomas, pituitary tumors)
- Thyroid Tumors
- Extremity Tumors (e.g., osteosarcoma, soft-tissue sarcomas, mast cell tumors)
- Spinal Tumors
- Pelvic Canal Tumors (e.g., anal gland adenocarcinomas)
- Liver Tumors
- Pancreatic Tumors
- Lung Tumors
- Kidney Tumors
- Post-Treatment Follow-up: They provide guidance for post-treatment care and schedule follow-up appointments to monitor recovery and assess the long-term effects of the treatment.
PetCure Oncology at Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center is distinguished by several key features and highlights that consistently earn praise from pet owners facing the difficult journey of a cancer diagnosis.

From the initial contact to post-treatment follow-up, clients emphasize feeling supported and understood. The staff’s gentle handling of pets and their ability to comfort worried owners during an emotionally taxing time is invaluable.

This is particularly crucial for families who may be traveling long distances, as PetCure staff assist with travel logistics and make the process as smooth as possible. Their willingness to accommodate schedules and answer "endless questions" without making pet owners feel rushed is a consistent theme.
- Expertise in Advanced Radiation Therapy: PetCure Oncology is at the forefront of veterinary radiation oncology, offering advanced treatments like Stereotactic Radiation (SRS/SRT). This cutting-edge technology, which precisely targets tumors with fewer sessions, provides a less invasive and often more effective option for pets, particularly for tumors previously considered untreatable.
- Personalized and Thorough Communication: The staff excels at clear and comprehensive communication. They take the time to explain diagnoses, treatment options, potential side effects, and prognosis in detail, ensuring pet owners are well-informed and confident in their decisions. This open dialogue builds immense trust.
- Genuine Connection with Patients: Pet owners frequently note that the staff develops a genuine bond with their animal patients. They can tell that the team takes the time to get to know each pet, making the animals feel comfortable and safe during their treatments. The joy expressed over "graduation photos" and "Pet Hero" bandanas further illustrates this special connection.

PetCure Oncology at Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center Reviews
We brought our dog in for radiation treatment on a tumor on her leg. From the first day we contacted PetCure they were so responsive and helpful. We had to travel 4+ hours to get there and they helped us thru every step. The staff were friendly and treated us and our dog so well. I’m thankful for all the time and effort they spent helping her.
Jun 20, 2025 · Meaghan VescioI can’t say enough positive things about the entire PetCure staff. They treated my dog, Macie, who has a brain tumor, and every member of staff was so kind and caring towards me and Macie. They always made time for the endless questions I bombarded them with, they never made me feel rushed, and they truly listened to everything I shared about how Macie was doing throughout her treatment. I could tell they were doing everything they could to make things as easy as possible for her, and every time I dropped her off, I knew she was in the best hands possible. I’m so grateful for the incredible care they gave Macie. This team gave her the absolute best care and treatment, and I couldn’t be more thankful. And I absolutely loved seeing her graduation photo and taking pictures around home in her new bandana as a Pet Hero!
Apr 20, 2025 · Richard LeckerPetcure has been excellent through the entire process from diagnosis through radiation. Everyone was very warm and welcoming and they would call daily for updates on his treatment. I hope you never need to use their services but if you do, don’t hesitate! They are THE best!!
Mar 06, 2025 · Brooke McKenzieI seriously can not go without providing a review from the fantastic care we received yesterday! Our sweet Darla was diagnosed with skin cancer on her nose. Doctor Urie and her techs went above and beyond to make sure that our sweetest girl got the BEST care!!! We have seen vets in at least four states over the last 12 years and while none have been bad, they have always felt rushed and were not always thorough. Dr. Urie, her techs, and all the staff were absolutely wonderful, thorough and we left yesterday confident with our plan and that we will still see several more years with our sweet pup. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!!!!!! 😍😍
Oct 17, 2023 · LeslieMy 16 year old pug, Winston, had SRT radiation for a nasal tumor at the beginning of April of 2024. The whole staff was wonderful. Anytime I had any questions everyone was helpful and quick to respond. Winston is doing pretty well and thanks everyone for his care. ❤️
