Beach Pet Hospital Reviews
On Monday, June 16, 2025, my beloved dog, Topper, lost his life due to what I firmly believe was veterinary negligence. That morning, we noticed he had urinated on the floor—very out of character. Concerned it might be a urinary tract infection, my daughter asked if I could take him to the vet. We scheduled a same-day appointment at Beach Pet Hospital, where Topper had been a patient since I adopted him in December 2020.Topper was a 10-pound small dog with a well-documented history of anxiety. His medical records reflected this, and I made sure to remind the staff during the visit. I told the vet tech that he gets very anxious in unfamiliar or stressful situations and that we typically medicate him for long car rides. Had I known his anxiety would spike so dramatically, I would have given him his medication beforehand. The tech said it would be okay and told me she was going to collect a urine sample. When she attempted to put a slip leash over him, I voiced my concern and suggested using his own leash and harness, which he was used to and felt safer in. She replied that they preferred to use their own leashes and proceeded to remove him from the room using theirs. What happened next was devastating. After a significant amount of time, the veterinarian returned with another staff member to inform me that Topper had escaped while being taken outside—into an unfenced area—to collect the sample. He had bolted, crossed the street, and run several blocks before being struck by a car. When I was finally brought to him, he was lying on a table, bloodied and barely breathing. A team of staff was trying to revive him. They managed to stabilize him enough to get an X-ray, which showed a broken pelvis. I stood there in horror, helpless. I told them that if they had simply come to get me, he would have come right to me. He was my shadow—my constant companion. He always came when I called. They moved him into an oxygen chamber. I stayed with him, whispering to him that I was there, willing him to hold on. Moments later, he stopped breathing. I called for help. They tried to revive him again, but it was too late. I watched my sweet boy die.I was then taken to a private room, where I held his lifeless body, waiting for my mother to bring my children so they could say goodbye. I was in shock, my eyes swollen from crying, replaying the horror over and over. All I could think was how terrified he must have been—and how I had failed him by trusting people who didn’t protect him. When my daughter arrived, she collapsed in tears next to him, begging him to wake up and blaming herself for asking me to take him to the vet. Leaving him there felt like leaving a piece of our hearts behind. The emotional toll on our family has been immense. It took four days for the swelling in my eyes to go down from crying. I see him everywhere—in the hallway, on the couch, at my feet. I still instinctively reach for two treats, only to put one back. Beach Pet Hospital is just five minutes away, but I now avoid that route entirely. The thought of passing that building fills me with anxiety. Knowing the exact spot where he was killed makes that intersection unbearable to drive through without breaking down.Even our other dog, Mea, is grieving. She wanders the house looking for him. She’s not eating well and sleeps in his favorite spots. She’s mourning in her own way, and our home feels emptier without him. This didn’t have to happen. I had fully informed the staff of Topper’s anxiety. I expressed concerns about using their leash and suggested safer alternatives. A simple decision—using his harness or collecting the sample indoors—could have saved his life. Instead, we are left with heartbreak, trauma, and the irreplaceable loss of a cherished family member.
Jun 26, 2025 · Sarah CunninghamBeach Pet Hospital and Dr. Johnson have been with us through every step of my dog Pippin’s journey, ever since he was diagnosed with renal dysplasia at just 4 months old. Dr. Johnson was always kind, patient, and incredibly thorough—she even referred us to a specialist and once personally drove to another clinic to get equipment needed for a test he needed performed. She always made time for our questions and never made us feel like an inconvenience. After Pippin passed, the entire team showed such heartfelt compassion. They remembered us right away, offered a refund for unopened supplies that we had just picked up the morning of the day he passed, and spoke with my boyfriend at the front desk—with Dr. Johnson even shedding tears with him. Later that day, they left flowers and a note on our doorstep that said, “We mourn with you on the loss of Pippin.”Their compassion, dedication, and genuine care meant more than I can say. I’ll always be grateful they were part of Pippin’s life.
Jun 20, 2025 · Laeklyn ShafferThe technician Ericca did a phenomenal job helping me put my old man down. He has been in excruciating pain for quite some time and stopped eating. I was a mess. She commonly helped me through every step of the process, communicating the whole way, and ensuring I was OK before she started or completed any of it. When it was over, she even offered for me to take home some kind of memorabilia of my baby boy. I couldn’t have done this without her kindness, compassion, and patience. Thank you to her and the amazing staff for making this transition a little more tolerable.
Jun 30, 2025 · Brandy LenhardtI would give them a 0 if I could. I brought my bird here due to her toe being bit by a cage mate and she just needed the nail to get cleaned up and get her some pain medication. She was taken to the back where I couldn’t see her and they “trimmed just her nail” according to the medical notes and she in-fact got half of her toe taken with it and it seems to have been cauterized. And for this they gave her absolutely no pain medication prior to it only some for me to give at home. When I got her back, she was panting (probably from the pain) and in shock and looked worse then when I took her in so I gave her the meds right then to help easy the pain from all the trama this practice has given her. Although now she’s doing good she is now traumatized to go into her medical carrier for regular vet check ups with her normal vet . It breaks my heart I could not have been there to stop it from happening before my poor girl was abused. Here’s a picture of her healed toe and from when she first got it removed where you can clearly see it was not just the nail that was taken off.
Aug 14, 2024 · shaila cokerBeach Pet is the BEST vet office in the area in my opinion. I’ve been to many different local offices and even traveled to Chesapeake once in search of the best vet for my dog. I have now seen 3 different doctors since being with beach pet and I am more than pleased with all of them! I have had only fantastic experiences from the front desk, vet techs, and the doctors. They all are so knowledgeable and really take time to answer all of my questions. They also are SO good with my dog. She gets real nervous at the vet as I’m sure many do, and they have the best vibe which makes her way more relaxed. I recommend them all the time! I also should mention they are very timely— this is a very important factor to me! I have not had to wait long at all to be seen with an appointment.
